Start with three numbers
Choosing a pump does not have to be complicated. Almost every decision comes down to three numbers: the flow rate you need, the height the water has to be lifted, and the pressure you want at the tap or outlet. Get these right and the rest of the choice falls into place.
1. Flow rate: how much water
Flow rate is the volume of water the pump moves over time, usually written in litres per minute or cubic metres per hour. For a home, add up the outlets that might run at once. A couple of bathrooms and a kitchen need far less flow than a garden irrigation line or a building with many apartments.
2. Head: how high and how far
Head is the vertical distance the pump must push water, plus the resistance from long pipe runs and fittings. A rooftop tank four floors up needs more head than a single storey villa. If you only look at flow and ignore head, you can end up with a pump that moves plenty of water on paper but cannot get it to the top of the building.
3. Pressure: how strong at the outlet
Pressure is what makes a shower feel good and a hose reach across the garden. Booster pumps are built to hold steady pressure even when several taps open at once, which is why they are the common choice for homes on a rooftop tank.
Matching the pump to the source
Where your water comes from matters as much as where it goes. A surface or booster pump suits homes fed from a ground or rooftop tank. A property drawing from a well or a deep cistern usually needs a submersible pump sized to the depth of the water. Pulling water up from depth with the wrong pump leads to poor performance and a shorter life.
Do not buy on price alone
A pump that is slightly too small runs constantly and wears out early. A pump that is far too large wastes energy and can cycle on and off in a way that damages it. The right size, matched to your real demand, runs quieter, lasts longer, and costs less to run over its life.
